I sat in the middle of a sea of young people, most not out of their twenties, some not even into them yet. I knew it would be like that, so I was fine and besides, they were all friendly faces.

My first class was 2D Design. We’ll meet twice a week for 2 1/2 hours — five hours total, plus an additional four hours a week for homework. Yikes!

Our assignments for the first week were:

  • Write a biographical statement, which I decided could do double duty as content for the Who Am I? page on the blog.
  • Find an example of what we consider to be good design and write a paper explaining why. I immediately began to over think this assignment. Here’s the image I ended up choosing. I haven’t written the paper yet.

  • Go to the Art Mart on Congress Street in Portland and pick up our Design Kits.  I love buying art supplies.

  • Take information from our biographical statements and using no more than 160 characters, create a personal QR code. QR stands for Quick Response Code. It consists of black modules arranged in a square grid on a white background. The codes can be read by a cellphone and generally link to web pages, phone numbers, SMS (short message service between phones) or text. Ours will link to text. It was really easy to do using Kaywa’s online QR generator.

What is the text embedded in my QR code? If you have a QR reader on your phone, you’ll know in an instant. If not, I’ll tell you what it says after this week’s classes and also what we’re going to do with them and why.

Well, I made it through my first week as an art student. My next class is Drawing 101. A full day of drawing. Really. Two hours in the morning, a two-hour break and three hours in the afternoon. I’m ready! I’ll let you know how it goes.

Congratulations Diane. What a great adventure!.
I may try it myself. After many years of enjoying photography I am becoming increasingly interested in art myself.

I hope you and Barry are doing great!

Best wishes

Hi Peter! We are doing great! As for going back to school, don’t even think about it. Just do it.
